a5c7b9f00b The meta-human heritage of the Last Son Of Krypton is tested as never before when a series of misadventures unlocks in Superman a very human emotion - love. Superman's love for journalist Lois Lane (<a href=">Margot Kidder) reaches a seemingly impossible peak, but requires the ultimate sacrifice - as the incompatible molecular structure of Kal-El (Superman's birth name) and Lois would gravely complicate the inevitable bearing of children, Kal-El must be purged of his superpower, to live as a mortal. Kal-El, despite the pleas of the spirit of his long-lost mother, willingly agrees, and now a normal human being, consummates his love for Lois - a decision that dooms the Earth as three criminals from Krypton, freed from their extra-dimensional prison, lay waste to the planet in a path of conquest aided by the planet's most arrogant criminal, Lex Luthor, who intends to smoke out Superman for his destruction - unaware as he is of The Man Of Steel's helplessness, a condition that only one last hope can rectify.
Terrorists have taken over the Eiffel Tower, and threaten to blow it up with a hydrogen bomb. Once again, Superman is there and saves Paris by throwing the bomb into outer space. Unfortunately, the explosion releases the three bad guys,General Zod (<a href=">Terence Stamp), Ursa, (<a href=">Sarah Douglas), and Non (<a href=">Jack O'Halloran) imprisoned in the first Superman movie. They then move in on Earth, taking it over, but little do they know who they will have to defeat.
After the awesome Superman, the producers gave us the just as awesome Superman II.

(SPOILERS THROUGHOUT THIS REVIEW) This is a really interesting film where three villains from Krypton come to Earth to rule after Superman inadvertently frees them from their space jail.

Superman decides to give up his powers to be with Lois Lane and this is an interesting sub plot. However, after he gives up his powers the three villains take over the Earth. Oh no, what will Superman do?

Terence Stamp plays the extremely wicked General Zod. Zod is pure evil-he's the type of villain who will kill anyone who even looks at him. Gene Hackman is also back as the opportunistic Lex Luthor who sides with whoever has the upper hand at any one time.

It's interesting seeing a powerless Superman particularly in the scene where some thug beats him up in a diner. Then Superman has to hike all over icy land to find a crystal that will return his powers.

The battle between the villains and Superman is awesome. Superman is a great hero with very high morals and I like the scene where he flees from the battle and makes himself look like a coward because he doesn't wany any innocent people caught in the crossfire. What a hero?

The final battle in Superman's base is awesome and it's great the way he outwits the villains with his brain rather than his strength. Then we're off to the diner again where Superman gives that thug his comeuppance.

All in all, a fantastic film. It's rare for a sequel to be as good. It has everything-action and fantastic subplots. And it was followed by two more great movies which I'll review when I can.
Many different extended versions of this film appeared on various TV stations across the world. These versions where a major improvement on an average film, that was badly butchered A lot of the footage was that of Richard Donner before he was sacked from directing the film. The longest known cut of Superman II appreared in Europe and Australia throughout the 1980s, and feature scenes that were not in the US extended screenings. The highlights of the expanded version to me, and scenes that I feel shouldn't have been cut are

* Concorde scene (although this scene was destined to be in the orginal picture) * Alternate Prison Laundry scene * Extended NASA/Moon scenes * Extended Prison escape sequence * The full 9 min sequence with Eve and Lex exploring the fortress (This scene was abruptly edited in US TV versions, but can be found in full in the European/Australian versions) * Whitehouse scenes - Zod using the gun, Non scaring the dog and Ursa mincing words with the president's agents! * Extended scenes of Lex and the villains at the whitehouse * Daily Planet extended sequences - Lex's lines, Lex stealing perry's coffee * Extended battle scenes - Non crashing into the wall * The alternate Donner footage of the villains, Lex and Lois outside the fortress * The Arctic police taken away Lex and the villains - Superman's "Blast off!" line * Long conversation between Superman and Lois at the fortress plus the full conversation on the balcony.

All these scenes I have mentioned improve the film greatly! the theatrical cut is just an average film. Hopefully we may see the lost Brando footage restored to the DVD along with these scenes!

Indo
With his perfect pacing, elegant narrative design, and depth of characterization, Richard Lester has made as good a matinee movie as could be imagined: it's a big, generous, beautifully crafted piece of entertainment, with the distinctive Lester touch in the busy backgrounds and the throwaway dialogue.
Not exactly. The cellophane "S" logo and the multiple holographic projections were traps Superman had prepared for the villains. This is confirmed by a line from the shooting script: "Zod begins to realize that Superman, on his home turf, has powers and devices at his command beyond their comprehension."

As for the villains, the lasers they shoot were intended as heat vision, while their "disappearing" power was not teleportation but super-speed. Although it was written as such in the script, these powers were not accurately depicted on screen.

Yes, but it was rarely used and later dropped. While not specifically stated, it is implied that he drained the power of the green crystal to restore his powers. In the screenplay, and as originally filmed, Jor-El used the remainder of his life force (from that crystal) to give his abilities once again. This was finally shown in the 2006 "Donner Cut". A comparison between the Theatrical Version and the Richard Donner Cut is more than difficult, as both version are very different from each other. Not only the usual additional scenes were added, it is almost a completely new movie. Parts of the story are shown at completely different points in time, other sequences were completely removed and some new sequences were added. In total the Donner Cut is approx. 11 minutes shorter than the Theatrical Version. Due to the humanisation process being spread out all over the vast interior of the Fortress of Solitude, rather than heavily concentrated into one small chamber as it was for Superman himself, it is feasible to conclude that the pain inflicted would be far less noticeable to them.
